Golf in San Diego

Posted on

For those who plan on traveling to San Diego for vacation do not forget your golf clubs. While San Diego is known for its great weather and amazing beaches we also have some of the best golf courses around, especially if you have some connections.

Most golfers are familiar with the name Torrey Pines, but until you play it you will never know the true beauty, amazing views and oh, the golf course isn’t too bad either. The views of the Pacific Ocean are incredible. Sprawled out on the cliffs of La Jolla, Torrey has the famous South course, home to the PGA Tour Farmers Open and the North Course, an equally challenging and beautiful representation of Southern California golf. For those of you that want to play “TP”, be sure to call in advance to reserve a tee time or test your luck with their walk-on list. Be sure to stop by their award winning golf shop and take home some memorabilia to commemorate your experience at one of San Diego’s best.

Next on the list would be our two resort courses, the La Costa Resort and Spa and the Aviara Golf Club. Located within 5 miles of one another in the North County, Aviara wins the beauty pageant and La Costa provides the challenge. Either way you can’t go wrong, as they are both fantastic golf courses with amazing service and amenities. Be prepared to open your wallet a little wider, Aviara and La Costa tend to be on the expensive side, but you truly get what you pay for at these coastal gems.

I would also suggest playing at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, home to the JC Golf School, where I have spent many years teaching and developing the junior golf program. Encinitas Ranch, a challenging course that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, has great views, good greens and a fun layout. If you want to have a relaxing day with friends and a breeze coming off the ocean to keep you cool, this is the spot hands down.

If you know the right people or have some connections there are quite a few amazing private golf clubs that are truly incredible. Del Mar CC, Rancho Santa Fe GC, The Grand, The Bridges, Santa Luz, Fairbanks CC, The Farms, San Diego CC, La Jolla CC, Pauma Valley and Lomas Santa Fe CC are some of my favorites. If there is anyway you can get out on anyone of these courses, do it!

Of course the aforementioned are some of my personal favorites, San Diego also has some very nice, fun and reasonably priced courses throughout the county such as Balboa Park, Steele Canyon, Barona Creek, Sycuan, Coronado, Salt Creek, Rancho Bernardo Inn, Twin Oaks, and the Temecula Creek Inn.

Regardless which course or courses you decide to play you really can’t go wrong. Just being in San Diego and swinging the club around is enough to make any day a success. If you need any help or any more info feel free to get in contact with the 18 GREENS staff.
